Behind the Name

Salix Apicis is the Latin translation of the Chinese name “柳峰”, meaning "willow tree of the peak." Together, the name carries the imagery of resilience, connection, growth, and aspiration.

The willow tree: known for its resilience and adaptability, the willow is said to “grow into shade even when planted without intention.” Its branches can take root and thrive even after leaving their original environment, much like students studying across the ocean who continue to adapt, absorb nutrients, and grow in unfamiliar soil. Willow branches are also often woven into different objects, such as wreaths and baskets. In the Salix Apicis community, we hope members can similarly come together, communicate, and collaborate across distance.

The mountain peak: members of Salix Apicis each have their own strengths and aspirations. Within this community, we learn from one another, support one another, and inspire one another. As each individual rises, the collective strength and vision of the community also rise, like countless mountains forming a greater landscape. We believe that when willows grow closely together, their branches connect; when peaks stand together, they form a view that can reach higher and farther.

Of course, the name “柳峰” has lived in many different imaginations. Beyond its official meaning, members have interpreted it from all kinds of unexpected and humorous angles. Here are some early comments from the founding group chat on the name:
